2. FTC-Iowa Qualification Tournament Information
Qualification Tournaments are well underway! We had a fantastic tournament at Linn-Mar High School on Nov. 19th and are looking forward to the upcoming events.

2-1) Tournament Schedule
FTC Tournaments are exciting events. However, the days are very full. In order to get the required elements completed, we do ask for teams to arrive at the venue early. What does this mean? Team check-in times range from 7:00-7:45am (teams registered for a specific event will be notified as to what time to be at the venue.) Yes, teams will NEED to check-in early.
**One thing to keep in mind: many of the volunteers arrive 90 minutes before teams check-in, so PLEASE be considerate.**

2-2) Online Consent Form: STIMS
As indicated through an ftcteams email blast last week, there is a new Online Consent form (STIMS) is now available for students under 18 to electronically submit their consent & release forms. Please visit the STIMS website for more information. Coaches will bring a printed copy of the roster to the events. If students turned in a paper copy, we are asking that they resubmit the information online. Thank you!

2-3) Event Cancellation Policy
We are, very quickly, entering winter. We ask that you please review the FTC-Iowa Event Cancellation Policy
http://drupal.engineering.uiowa.edu/ftc-iowa-event-cancellation-policy

2-4) Engineering Notebook Sample
Need guidance for your engineering notebook? Is your team documenting things properly?  If you have questions, or would like to see a *great* engineering notebook, check out the FTC Engineering Notebook website
A few things to keep in mind:
  • Notebooks are used to help determine many of the awards
  • Each notebook must have biographies of the team members
  • Notebooks must be organized and legible.
  • Notebooks should include items the team did beyond the robot (outreach, fundraising, etc.)
2-5) Listing of Awards
Is your team unfamiliar with what awards are distributed at a qualifier? Or, is your team wondering what the criteria of each award it?  If you have questions about the awards, please view the awards website.

Check out the presentation from the senior mentor call at:
http://usfirst.org/roboticsprograms/ftc/senior_mentor_call_schedule

2-6) Advancement Criteria
With the implementation of qualifiers, many teams want to know the advancement to the next level. From each qualifier, four teams will advance to the next level of competition, which is FTC-Iowa Championship in Feb. 2012 Are you curious as to which teams advance and how they are selected? Check out the advancement criteria website on the FTC home
FTC-Iowa follows the criteria put forth by FTC.

A listing of teams who advance is published at: http://k-12.engineering.uiowa.edu/
---

3. Payments for Qualifier Registration

We ask for teams, who have not submitted payment for the qualifier tournaments, to please submit payment as soon as possible. We understand some school boards may need to be involved, and that takes time, but let us know an approximate timeframe. Also, if you need us to resubmit an invoice, we can do that as well.

Thanks and keep up the good work!!

FTC-Iowa: Ankeny Scrimmage (10/29/2011)

The FTC-Iowa team attended a fantastic scrimmage today in at Ankeny High School in Ankeny, Iowa. Thank you teams #3738 & #5126 for hosting!!

The FTC-Iowa team continues to be amazed with the tasks and challenges the teams are accomplishing at this stage of the season. Although we had seen a few of the teams at the Oct. 1 Skills Driving Event, there were a few teams who we haven't seen since Kick-Off.

Teams are getting a great start, with the mechanics of the robot, if they follow the TETRIX Getting Started Guide. Kudos, to the folks at LEGO Education who developed the Guide! Also, teams are also benefiting from the redesign of LabView for LEGO Mindstorms. Kudos, National Instruments!

During the scrimmage, we held two workshop sessions of LabView training. Thank you, Andy Marshall, for leading these workshops! We also had hardware and software inspections. Thank You, Leon Turner, Art Roderick, and Craig Martinson for being our inspectors!

What we learned at the scrimmage:
  1. Bowling balls (and racquetballs) have a mind of their own.
  2. Everyone on the team should be familiar with the Game Manual.
  3. Adaptors help with "flashing" the Samantha. (These are USB A-USB B female adaptors, see picture.)
  4. if the team does not want to have "drop-outs" during a match, the Samantha module needs to be properly and securely mounted onto the robot. (See recommendations on usfirst.org website)
  5. Teams learn so much when they work with, and next to, other teams.
If you haven't attended a scrimmage, our last one is next week! Also FTC-Iowa Qualifiers start on Nov. 19. If you don't know your assignment, visit
http://drupal.engineering.uiowa.edu/ftc-iowa-qualifier-tournaments-2011-assignments

Thank you to all of the teams, coaches, mentors and volunteers who attended the Ankeny Scrimmage!

P.S. No racquetballs were "injured" at the Ankeny scrimmage.

FTC-Iowa: Oelwein Scrimmage (10/22/2011)

The FTC-Iowa Scrimmage in Oelwein was a huge success! We had seven teams attending and one brand new team who observed. Amazing! Thank you, team #4329 for hosting!!

A few things we learned:
  • With the new TETRIX Getting Started Guide, teams were more prepared when they attended the scrimmage event. All of the teams had some sort of robot and many of the teams were focusing on manipulation of the scoring elements (whether it was the crates, racquetballs or the bowling balls.)
  • The new LabView for LEGO Mindstorms (LVLM) software is giving teams is great start on programming through the tutorials and the schmatic diagram.
  • Several teams had autonomous programs for the robots! (This is a HUGE advancement from last season, again, thanks to LVLM!)
  • Some of the racquetballs will break (see picture)
  • Robots will cause chaos on the field with 100 racquetballs.
  • Bowling balls have a mind of their own. They won't necessarily do as they are "told".
Overall, we were very impressed with the level of achievement and stage of development of the robots and teams.  We ran about 20 matches and several of them were full matches -- meaning four robots were on the field.

Be ready! The teams are going to do some amazing stuff this season!!

Our next scrimmage is this Saturday (Oct. 29th) in Ankeny, Iowa.

FTC Team Blast #4: October Status Report | Scrimmage Events | Community Networking | FTC on YouTube! | Qualifier Registration | Seeking Volunteers

Hello teams!
This email includes the following information:

1. October Team Status Report
2. Scrimmages are Open!
3. Community Networking - 5 Easy Steps
4. Video Resources on YouTube!
5. Qualifier Registration - Round #2 Closes tomorrow, Oct. 20th
6. Seeking Volunteers

---
1. October Team Status Report
Each month, we ask for teams to provide feedback in regards to their progress. This feedback is then used to provide support or help resolve any problems or questions teams may have encountered. It is very beneficial for teams to complete the Status Reports.
The October Status Report can be completed at: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dDF0eU5LQ1g2UmpJT21EYjJXUVhIYlE6MA#gid=0
This report will close on October 27, 2011.

During the FTC season, we pick a random status report and send out a little token of appreciation to those teams who complete it. Is the October one the lucky report?
---
2. Scrimmage Events are Open!

Scrimmage events are excellent opportunities for teams. Although the goal of the scrimmages are to run matches for teams, the exchanging of ideas from the teams is amazing. Teams who attend scrimmages walk-away with so much more information and knowledge, it really is amazing.

Is your team a little scared of attending a scrimmage because "they aren't ready"? Its ok! Scrimmages are events where your team can arrive with a box of parts, and by the end of the event, your team will have a chassis. (We've seen that happen several times!) We would encourage rookie teams to work through the "Getting Started with TETRIX Guide", which was included with your kit.

Scrimmage events are:
Oct. 22 - Oelwein
Oct. 29 - Ankeny
Nov. 5 - Solon
More information, including how to register, can be found at: http://drupal.engineering.uiowa.edu/ftc-iowa-2011-events

---
3. Community Networking - 5 Easy Steps
FTC teams are successful when they begin to use the resources (whatever they may be) in their community. On Monday, Ken Johnson, Director of FTC, posted an article on his blog about Community Networking. The article was written by Terri Willingham a coach for "Team Duct Tape" in Florida. The information provided is VERY helpful. Check it out at: http://firsttechchallenge.blogspot.com/2011/10/community-networking-in-5-easy-steps.html

Think your community is too far from "civilization"? Do you live out "in-the-middle-of-no-where" and you don't have any local resources? You do. Just ask.

---
4. Video Resources on YouTube! Some great resources for your team may include watching some YouTube videos. Check out the following resources:
Do you have a YouTube Channel? We'd like to know! Please send us the link to your YouTube Channel or some of the videos you've posted.
---

5. Qualifier Tournaments - Round #2 Closes tomorrow, Oct. 20th

Thank you for all of the teams who have signed up for Qualifier Tournaments. At this time, we have each team designed to at least one event.
A few things to keep in mind:
  • Teams are only "required" to compete at one event.
  • Any team who chooses to compete in a second event, they must register before Oct. 20th. (TOMORROW!)
  • If a team registers for two qualifiers, and then advances to state from their first competition, they are still obligated to attend the second qualifier
  • Each qualifier has a registration fee of $150. If a team registers for two events, the total cost of registration fee is $300. Invoices will be sent out early next week.
Currently, many of the qualifiers are currently full to capacity. If your team has not signed up, but is interested in attending a second qualifier, please register here.

---
6. Seeking Volunteers
Are there members of your community (parents of your team members, school board members, local engineers, etc) who would like to be involved more with FTC by helping at an event? There are some excellent opportunities for more community involvement. We are seeking volunteers for our qualifier tournaments and the state championship event. Some positions (judge, referee, FTA, emcee, scorekeeper, etc) require pre-event training, but for others, no training is required. More information can be found at: http://drupal.engineering.uiowa.edu/ftc-iowa-volunteers
All volunteers will receive a t-shirt (to wear on that day) and a "Volunteer Passport". For each event a volunteer helps with, they will receive a "stamp" of appreciation. Try to collect all of the stamps!

A final note about volunteers: FTC-Iowa would not be successful if it wasn't for the dedicated and wonderful volunteers who help with this program. These folks give their time to help the students of your community. Show some appreciation by Thanking a Volunteer today! Thank you!!

--------
Have a good week and see you out there!

As always, please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions!!!

FTC-Iowa Qualifying Tournament: Registration Round #2

In order to allow teams to compete, and fulfill the criteria for the many team grants, we are implementing Qualifying Tournaments in Iowa.Teams MUST compete at a qualifying tournament to advance to the FTC-Iowa Championship.

1. Qualifier Tournaments - "Assignments" from Round #1
2. Qualifier Tournaments - Round #2 is Open
3. Amount of Space at Qualifiers
4. Scrimmage Events - Registration Open

---
1. Qualifier Tournaments - "Assignments" from Round #1
Based on the information we received during Round #1, we have placed teams in the qualifiers they indicated they would be interested in attending. Please see the attached document.

A few things to keep in mind:
  • At this time, we cannot make changes to the "assignments".
  • If you do not see your team number on the attached sheet, it means you did not register during Round #1.
----
2. Qualifier Tournaments - Round #2 is Open

To register for the Qualifying Tournaments, visit: k-12.engineering.uiowa.edu and under "FTC-Iowa Qualifying Tournaments" is information on how to register.
This is Round #2. It will close on October 20th.

A few things to keep in mind:
  • Teams can select two events they would like to attend. These should be different from the event you were "assigned" to from Round #1. Again, after Round #2 closes, teams will receive their assignment based on their feedback.
  • If a team DOES register for a second qualifier, they are committing to attending two events. (Example: A team does very well and earns a bit to compete at the FTC-Iowa Championship from a November qualifier event. The team has also signed up to attend a January qualifier. They are still responsible to attend the January event.) If a team does not attend the second qualifier event, which they have registered for, they will automatically forfeit their bit to the FTC-Iowa Championship.
  • Each qualifier has a registration fee of $150, and they will be billed at the same time. (Invoices will be sent out after Round #2 closes.)
  • Teams are NOT required to register/attend two qualifier events. If the team only wants to compete in one qualifier, that is just fine.
----
3. Amount of Space at Qualifiers
Based on the information provided during Round #1, the following is how many OPEN spots are left at each Qualifier event.
  • Nov. 19th event in Marion, Iowa: 2 spots remain
  • Dec. 3rd event in West Des Moines, Iowa: 7 spots remain
  • Dec. 17th event in Van Horne, Iowa: 9 spots remain
  • Jan. 7th event in Cedar Rapids, Iowa: 5 spots remain
  • Jan. 21st event in Davenport, Iowa: 7 spots remain
  • Jan. 28th event in Ottumwa, Iowa: 7 spots remain
  • Feb. 4th event in Blair, NE: 11 spots remain
---
4. Scrimmage Events - Registration Open

The best way to get practice before a qualifier is to attend a scrimmage event. We are very fortunate to be able to partner with several teams host three scrimmage events and they are:
Oct. 22: Oelwein, Iowa
Oct. 29: Ankeny, Iowa
Nov. 5: Solon, Iowa

Attending a scrimmage is at free, and teams get so much good information by attending a scrimmage.
Please sign up for scrimmages at: http://drupal.engineering.uiowa.edu/ftc-iowa-2011-events

As always, please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.

Good luck!

FTC-Iowa 2nd Annual Skills Driving Event

On Saturday, Oct. 1, we hosted our Skills Driving Event for FTC teams.  This is our 2nd Annual Skills Driving Event.

Teams were only encouraged to have a robot chassis. All of the teams (who had their kits) had a chassis and a simple program on their bricks! A HUGE thank you, PITSCO, for the "Getting Started with TETRIX Guide" for providing a great starting point for teams! (In addition, Samantha worked like a charm. We did not have any connectivity issues!)

Out of the ten teams who attended, half were rookie teams! In addition, we had two visitors who decided to start up teams at their school!

The Skills Driving course was a modified game field with modified obstacles and modied rules. A few of the "Bowled Over" elements were incorporated into the Skills Driving course. The main goal of the event was to get teams interacting with each other and practice driving and controlling the robots. Points were not tabulated nor were robots timed to complete the course.

Things learned at the Skills Driving Event:
Broken racquetball
  • The bowling balls are not easily controlled. Teams will need to develop an effective strategy to control the bowling balls.
  • As bowling balls roll down ramps, the robots may want to be out of the way.
  • Racquetballs can get stuck under a robot, and can be "pinched"
  • Racquetballs can easily split in half when stuck under a robot (see note above and pic)
  • Robots don't move very effectively or efficiently when a racquetball is under it. :)
  • Teams learn so much by being around other teams and talking about their experiences.
Check out the video of the course Skills Driving Event, FTC-Iowa

Overall, teams were more prepared this year. Robots and students did a great job.

A huge THANK YOU! to Beta, Team #3550

Our next event is Oct. 22 in Oelwein, Iowa! Looking forward to seeing the teams there!

    FTC YouTube Channel and Samantha

    YouTube Channel
FIRST Tech Challenge has put together a YouTube Channel with some very neat videos!
Check out their YouTube Channel: FTC YouTube

And, if you missed the I.Am.FIRST special in August, the FTC YouTube Channel has the full video!

Side Note #1: I would also recommend "Subscribing" to the Channel and maybe even receive notifications when new videos are uploaded."

    ----
    Samantha Wi-Fi Module
    Samantha Mounting from Team 1902
The Samahtha Wi-Fi Module is THE communication device between the robot and the computer. Each team need to have one Samantha on their robot to make it run. Sometimes teams get confused with how to set-up the Samantha, but there is help!

All teams (rookie & returning) are highly encouraged to read through the Samantha Resources on the FTC website. Some stuff has changed from last season.

In addition, one of the first videos on the FTC YouTube site is about Samantha. Last season was the first FTC season using the Samantha Wi-Fi module and some teams got really confused in regards to setting up the configuration of the Samantha. Check out "How to set up your Samantha Module" video. Thanks, team #4530!

Side Note #2: Again, please don't forget to read the Samantha Resources

Illinois Institute of Technology produced a recent study of Samantha Mounting (Placement and Orientation). A very cool read. Check it out.

    2. Team Status Check
    3. Bowled Over Field & Materials
    4. Excellent Resource "FTC Teams: Tips, Tricks, Strategies & Secrets (new edition!)"

    ----
    1. Upcoming Events
The best way to get some experience, and see what other teams are doing, is to attend some pre-competition scrimmage events. These events, are FREE! Teams are encouraged to attend at least one, if not two of them.

On Saturday, Oct. 1, Team #3550 - Beta, will be hosting our first event, the Skills Driving Challenge. Check out the events website at: http://staging1.engineering.uiowa.edu/ftc-iowa-2011-events
The Skills Driving event is a GREAT way for teams to get experience with the Samantha, how to drive a robot and to meet with other teams. This event was VERY popular last season.

    2. Team Status Check
We are asking for ALL teams to complete a brief on-line form about how your team is doing. (If you have multiple teams, you will need to complete the form multiple times.) This form gives our team a great snapshot of the progress of all of our teams and see if there are areas in which we can help you. The online survey can be found at: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?hl=en_US&formkey=dENtNi16UGJ0aXRMRlQ2MHZvUi1DeGc6MA#gid=0

    3. Bowled Over Field & Materials

We have been asked, by many teams, as to where they can purchase the items for the Bowled Over game. Thank you, to Oregon FTC, for putting together this list.
**Please note: It is not required for teams to have a complete field to participate. If teams are only able to build a quarter of the field, that works as well.**
    • Bill of Materials - Official "Bowled Over" Bill Of Materials
    • The crates -  Sterilite 1695. Teams can also find them at Wal-mart. Teams don't need the clear ones. They are cheap at $1 per crate.
    • Racquetballs - Teams don't need 100 of them for practicing. You can order them from AndyMark (www.andymark.com) at $16.28 for 24.
    • Bowling Balls - check with your local bowling center and tell them what you are doing and ask if they would sell you a used 6lb. ball OR ask if they could order one at the their cost for your team. If your team decides not to attempt the bowling ball ramp part of the challenge you can skip purchasing one.
    • Lights on the off-field goals - Teams don't need the lights in the ball containers at the side of the field and teams really only need to build one ramp.
    • Low Cost Perimeter Option - Check it out on the FTC website: http://www.usfirst.org/uploadedFiles/Community/FTC/FTC_Documents_and_Updates/2008/Low%20Cost%20Field%20BOM.pdf
    • Field tiles - The official tiles used for the FTC field floor are sold through Soft Tiles (www.softtiles.com), as they are the vendor for the official FTC Field Floor. They are offering FTC teams a 10% discount. To get the discount you must place your order by PHONE 888-477-6532 (toll free) (9am – 5:30pm EST). Ask for the 2’ x 2’ gray tiles 5/8” thick and tell them you are a FTC Coach. 12’ x 12’ field = 36 tiles = $187.92 + about $50 S & H.  Please note: You still get the discount if you order less tiles.

    4. Excellent Resource: "FTC Teams: Tips, Tricks, Strategies & Secrets" (new edition!) A huge "Thank You" to Bill Mattaliano, of Solon Robotics Teams #367 & #5062, for letting us know about an updated version of the FTC book called "FTC Teams: Tips, Tricks, Strategies & Secrets". Although it is not required for teams to have a copy, teams can learn a lot from this book. Amazon is selling them for about $10. ISBN-13 #: 978-1463788728.

    ----------------
    1. "Bowled Over" Kickoff

Welcome to "Bowled Over!" Thank you to all of you who were able to attend the FTC-Iowa Kick-Off Celebration on Saturday, September 10, 2011 at Vinton-Shellsburg High School. (Huge thank you to the teams who hosted, #3548, #4371, and #5153!) It was a great day!! If you were not able to attend, the game video, game manual and field bill of materials can be found at: http://www.usfirst.org/2011-2012-ftc-game-preview

    ----------------
    2. Tournament Structure for FTC-Iowa (New for 2011/2012)

The FTC-Iowa program runs a two-tier tournament structure - local qualifying tournaments and a FTC-Iowa Championship. The Qualifying Tournaments are hosted in various communities, beginning on Nov. 19th, and will typically have between 12-16 teams competing. Approximately four teams, per qualifier, will advance to the FTC-Iowa Championship.

Attached is the FTC-Iowa Tournament Policies. In addition, they can be found on our website (k-12.engineering.uiowa.edu, click on "FTC" -->2011/12 FTC-Iowa Events --> Information about the Qualifier Tournaments)

Registration for qualifying tournaments will be performed through the FTC-Iowa web site starting in October.

If you have any questions about the Qualifying Tournaments, please do not hesitate to ask.

    ----------------
    3. New FTC-Iowa Website

During the off-season, we have been very busy revamping the FTC-Iowa website. The new URL is k-12.engineering.uiowa.edu, and click on FTC.
The old "google site" eventually will be removed. If there are things you don't see on the new site, please let us know and we will make sure it gets over to the new site.

Please keep in mind, there are a few items on the new site that may change, eventually. This includes the specific URL and the "Home" button, which doesn't work, at this time. (In the mean time, please use your browser's back button).

    ----------------
    4. Non-Competition Events are Open!
We encourage all teams to attend as many non-competition events as possible. If your team would like to register for the Skills Driving Event or any of the Scrimmages, you can do so at this time, via the new website. A listing of events is attached as well. Non-competition events are THE BEST way to improve your robot and see how other teams have taken on the "Bowled Over" Challenge.

Thank you and we look forward to a great season!

    A Few Thoughts Before Kick-Off...

Its hard to believe that we are just days away from the 2011 FTC Kick-Off. Its so close, we can almost count down the hours! I feel as giddy as I did on the nights before a new school year/the start of a new job, etc. To put it simply, I am giddy. I cannot imagine what the staff at FIRST is feeling; and the Game Design Committee members, they must be over-excited.

One important note: The FTC staff and GDC member should be thanked a million times, and then thanked again. These folks work all year long on the game, in fact, they probably started brainstorming last fall. They are truly an amazing group of folks and I personally admire each and every one of them. As you read the Game Manual on Saturday, take a look at the first few pages and send a thank you to the magical/brilliant/amazing members of the GDC & FTC staff. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
To them, I say "Oink! Oink!" :-)

    Kick-Off in Iowa: A Celebration
On Saturday, Sept. 10, the FTC-Iowa program is hosting its annual Kick-Off Celebration. This is our 3rd Annual Kick-Off Event, and it really is a celebration. We are celebrating the new season. We are celebrating the wonderful volunteers, who dedicate their time to FTC. We are celebrating the returning coaches who are offering FTC to their students - again. We are celebrating the rookie coaches who are willing to offer FTC to their students. We are celebrating. (We anticipate nearly 270 students/mentors/volunteers/coaches who will be celebrating with us.)
Check out the FTC-Iowa Celebration website.

Its time to "Get Over It"...
Last season, FTC-Iowa had many highs and many lows and I, personally, was not prepared to handle all of the peaks and valleys of last season. However, I got through them because of the wonderful support I received from the members of FTC-Iowa Advisory Group. To these guys, I am forever grateful. You are my brothers. :-)
In addition, the coaches and students were just amazing. You kept me going - You gave me the steam to continue. Thank you.
Its official. Its time to Get Over It.

    Thank you!
A huge thank you to Rockwell Collins, as they are the Official Program Sponsor of the FTC program. In Iowa, we are very fortunate to have such a great relationship with Rockwell Collins. Their employees/retirees/interns serve as coaches, mentors and volunteers for the FTC-Iowa program. Thank you.

    Game Hints
Although Ken has revealed some Game Hints on his blog, I'm hoping for water balloons. Sorry, but I don't have any game hints. ;(

    And Finally...
Good luck to the FLL teams on "Food Factor" and Jr. FLL teams on "Snack Attack". May those students continue with FIRST and we'll see them in a few years in FTC. Please wish me luck as I coach my first FLL and Jr. FLL teams. (I have REALLY been bit by the FIRST bug.)

Wishing all of the FTC teams a great Kick-Off and a wonderful season!

    See you out there,

Global Collaboration | Workshops | Grants for FTC-Iowa teams

On Monday, we were fortunate to meet with a representative from PTC, Jordan Cox. There is some exciting stuff for the upcoming season.

    1. FTC Global Collaboration
    2. PTC Workshops
    3. Rockwell Collins Grants

    ----
    1. FTC Global CollaborationPTC is starting a new program called the "Global Collaboration Project". This would be to pair-up successful Iowa teams with teams in different countries, specifically India. The Iowa teams would help mentor the teams from India via Skype and use the WindChill collaboration tool and ProE/MathCad (this is where PTC is interested). The India FTC season will start June 1 and the Championship will be on Aug. 15. The game they will be playing is "Get Over It!". On Aug. 15th, the goal is to have an area where the Iowa teams can "watch" how their counterparts in India are doing at their Championship, all via Skype. Our team is trying to organize a location for this.

Consider this an opportunity for your team to: 1) meet and work with students from different countries; 2) have the ability to use and gain knowledge with using the PTC software: Pro/E, WindChill, and MathCad, so you can be proficient next season; 3) have the ability to work through Get Over It! a second time and look at the challenge in a new prospective.  If you are interested in helping teams from India, please let me know by Monday, May 23rd. I will then forward your contact information to PTC and they can get WindChill accounts set up for your team members.

(FYI: all of the students from India do speak English, to some extent.)

    -----
    2. PTC Workshops
One thing we discovered by attending World Championships, a few weeks ago, was the amount of teams who used Pro/E to design their bots. We understand using another software program takes time, which many teams do not have, but please think of it this way:

    • If you do not use Pro/E or a CAD program to build your robot, you can get the structure done faster. However, what happens if an internal part disconnects? What happens if the center of gravity is off? You would need to dismantle the bot or it may tip over and not function.
    • If you do use Pro/E or a CAD program to help build the bot, the bot may not be constructed quickly, but your team will be able to test the center of gravity and you'll be able to see how the internal dimensions of the bot. In addition, you will know the exact dimensions of the bot, which comes in handy for inspections.
    • *Remember, Pro/E and the other PTC software applications come when you purchase the kit of parts and/or the Software Renewal Package.*
About 95% of teams, who competed at Worlds used Pro/E or a CAD software.

In August and throughout the early next season we will be hosting PTC workshops. If you are interested in attending or even hosting a workshop, please let us know by Monday, May 23rd so we can arrange dates and locations.

    ---
    3. Rockwell Collins Grants
Please don't miss out on this opportunity to get support through Rockwell Collins. They are now accepting applications for FTC team grants. More information can be found on our website: https://sites.google.com/site/ftciowa/

Historically, their policy is to award grants to non-profit organizations, such as schools, 4-H Clubs, Girl/Boy Scouts, etc. In addition, they will award up to 2 grants per location - so, if you had one team last season, and would like to start up a second team, please submit an application for your team from last year and another one for your new team. (If you are not adding any more teams, please submit an application for your team from last year.)

Changes to FTC-Iowa Program for 2011/2012: Qualifier Tournaments

As we prepare for the 2011/2012 FTC Season, we are anticipating large team growth in Iowa. In order to allow teams to compete, and fulfill the criteria for the Rockwell Collins grants, we will be implementing Qualifier Tournament System throughout Iowa.

Some FAQ about the Qualifier Tournament System:

--What is a qualifier tournament? Qualifier tournaments, hosted throughout the State, are small tournaments between 12-16 teams competing. Teams compete in order to advance to the FTC-Iowa Championship. Team will not be allowed to compete at the FTC-Iowa Championship without competing at a qualifier.

-- Is there a max of number of qualifiers for each team? Teams will be able to participate in 2 or 3* qualifiers. *If a team participates in an early event, it may be possible for teams to participate in two additional events. The idea: Teams should play early and play often.

-- How do teams register? Shortly after Kick-Off, teams will have one week to register for their first qualifier. We will close that registration after one week. The next week, the second round of qualifier registrations will open, which will close after one week. Teams and qualifier hosts will be notified as who will be attend the events. Please note: If teams do not sign up for a qualifier event during the registration weeks, they will forfeit the opportunity to compete and will not be able to compete at the FTC-Iowa Championship.

-- Other details: If a team registers for two qualifiers, and earns a bid to the FTC-Iowa Championship from the first one, they will still be RESPONSIBLE to attend the second qualifier. If a team does not attend the second qualifier, they will forfeit their bid to the Iowa Championship. As a Qualifier Tournament host, you are counting on having the registered teams attend.

-- Who advances from the Qualifier Tournament? Currently, the Inspire Award Winning Team, the Captain of the Winning Alliance, and one other team (criteria to be determined) will advance to the FTC-Iowa Championship.

Although there are many details yet to be figured out, this is the start for teams to prepare for the qualifiers.

Remember, teams, the key its that you compete early and compete often.

Good luck and see you at Kick-Off!

    • Spare fuses for the external battery pack
    • Robot box or cart to transport robot, computer and tools between the pit area and the playing fields

    What not to bring:
Please do not bring your teams' router. This will cause interference with the router/network we have set up and you will be asked to turn it off.

    8.      Team Check-in
Team check-in will occur in the Hubbard Commons Entrance of the IMU. There will be signs posted to help you direct you to team check-in.

·Friday Evening: Teams are required to check-in and be inspected on Friday, Feb. 25. Team check-in will be available from 1:30pm-8:00pm. The pits will be open until 9:00pm on Friday, February 25. Food will be available, for purchase in the River Room from 4:30pm-6:30pm. All teams must be checked-in by 8:00pm on Friday, February 26.
·Saturday Morning: On Saturday, teams will need to re-check in between 7:00am-7:30am.
·Each team has an assigned inspection times (hardware) and an assigned judging time. (See page 8) Teams who make additional modifications on their robots, may need to do a brief re-inspection on Saturday morning.
·Teams will turn in their engineering notebooks at the time of check-in, as this will enable the judges to review the materials before the beginning of the judging sessions. They will be returned to your team after the judging has concluded.
·Teams will also be expected to turn in Consent Forms when they check in. (See item #5.)

    9.      Teams will receive an information packet at check-in. Please review this packet thoroughly in the event that it contains some last minute changes to schedules, procedures, etc.

·Each team will be provided a 10’x10’ area to use as their “pit” space. These will be located on the 2nd of the IMU. (see attached map)
·Due to the nature of the flooring, in the pit area, we request that any work that is likely to create significant dust or debris (like drilling) should be performed on the “Pit Work Area”, which will be located near the Pit Administration desk. Any work likely to cause sparks (dremel work) or strong odors (gluing), will need to be done outside of the IMU.
·Teams may bring battery powered screwdrivers, as long as they are not used to drill or grind.
·Please do not remove the numbers from your pit area, as they help the judges, queuing staff, and other event officials find you.
·Experienced teams suggest bringing a tub or trash bag for storing coats, as there is no coat check available.
·You are more than welcome to bring items (eg: team pins/flare) to exchange with other teams.
·Power will be provided at each of the pit areas. Please check your power source upon arrival and contact the Pit Administration Desk if something is not working.

    13.  Practice Field
We will have a practice field set up for teams and are waiting for their matches and/or judging times. This will be located in the 2nd Floor Ballroom Foyer area (see map). We will have a sign-up sheet near the practice field. Please be considerate of others while using this field. Everyone near the practice area must wear safety glasses; including spectators, coaches and players.

    14.  Robot Inspection Schedule
Teams are assigned times for robot hardware inspection and robot software inspection.
Please arrive early for each of these activities; teams missing their appointment times may not pass inspection prior to their first scheduled qualification match.

    • Robot Hardware Inspection: Robot Hardware inspections will be performed in Rooms #181 or #179, depending on your team’s division. Teams are assigned a time and an inspection station. Please arrive early for your “appointment” and bring the following items:
      • Robot
      • Samantha Module (installed)
      • NXT (installed)
      • External battery (installed)
      • Robot inspection list
      • One or two students who are familiar with the robot
      • A maximum of three team members, please.

    • Robot Software Inspection: Robot Software inspections will be performed in the same rooms as Hardware Inspection. Your team will go immediately to Software Inspection after Hardware Inspection. (If you do not pass Hardware Inspection, please continue to Software Inspection, prior to being re-inspected with Hardware.)
      • The three person drive team. (Three team members max!)

    • Field Inspection: Field inspections will be performed in the Main Lounge of the IMU. During these inspections, robots will be tested to see if they can connect to the field’s wireless communication system, via their Samantha Module.

The field inspections will occur immediately following the software inspections.

    • After passing all three inspections (Hardware, Software, and Field) you will receive a colored dot to put on your robot. Please put this directly on the white team sticker that was placed on your bot when you checked-in for Hardware Inspections.

    • YOUR ROBOT MUST PASS INSPECTIONS IN ORDER TO COMPETE.

    15.  Judging Information
Each team is assigned a 10-minute slot for formal judging (example: 8:05-8:15am).

Formal judging is an important part of the competition. Teams must attend their designate judging session. Teams should bring their robots to the judging session. Teams should have a brief presentation to begin the discussion. The remainder of the time will be spent answering questions from the judges.

At least 10 minutes prior to your teams’ designated judging time, your team must check-in with the judging crew on 3rd floor, in the Big Ten Lobby (see IMU map). Please do not enter the judging rooms until your team is instructed to do so. Each interview will end 10 minutes after they begin. Please keep in mind, teams arriving late for their interviews will not receive additional time.

All members of the team should attend the judging session; it is not required for coaches to be in attendance. Coaches are encouraged to attend, but they are not required to attend the judging session. Coaches should be silent observers, unless a judge addresses a question to the coach.

Spectators and video cameras are not allowed in the judging rooms.

Please keep in mind:  this is the time for the students to show off their accomplishments to the judges.

    16.  Coaches & Driver’s Meeting
The Drivers/Coaches meeting will cover Referee and FTA expectations of teams during their time on the competitions fields.  During this meeting, all aspects of what is expected of the drive team, student coaches, adult coaches, mentors and spectators, while your team is competing on the fields at the Iowa Championship.

    18.  Robot Match Procedure
On Saturday, at 7:30am, after all of the teams have re-checked-in, we will generate the match schedule for the qualification matches. (This will be distributed to the teams via the Pit Administration Desk.) Please designate one person, on your team, to monitor match progress on the playing fields. Match times are estimates; we will progress through matches as quickly as we can. If we are ahead of schedule, we will not wait for the scheduled start time: we will start as soon as the teams and robots are ready.

A few things to keep in mind:
·Before Arriving at the Championship: Please review section 3.6 “Event Day Overview” of the Game Manual.
    ·In the Pit Area:
o   NXT has an “auto sleep” mode for inactivity. Please disable or turn off this function.
o   Disable the sleep mode on the computer.
o   Charge your batteries as much as possible.
    ·         In the Queuing Area:
o   Report to the queuing area on time, even if you are having technical problems. Technical help will be available in the queuing areas if teams are having trouble with this connection.
o   Arrive in the queuing area for your assigned playing field 10 minutes prior to the start of the match ahead of yours.
o   We will be running two fields, for each division. Odd numbered matches will be played on Field #1 and even numbered matches will be played on field #2. Therefore, if your team is participating in match #10, arrive in the queuing area in the Main Ballroom five minutes before the start of Match #8.
o   Queuing areas will have power strips for team use.
o   Pay attention to the action on your assigned playing field. Move to the alliance station at the playing field as soon as teams from the previous match clear the playing field.
o   Make sure your Samantha is connected and working.
    ·         On the Playing Field:
o   Red Alliance robots are placed on the field first.
o   Blue Alliance robots are placed on the field after the red alliance robots are on the field.
o   Perform the following checks (as a minimum) each time your robot is placed on the playing field: 1. Pre-load batons; 2. Turn on the switch for the external battery; 3. Select and execute the autonomous program on the NXT.
o   Pay attention to the instructions from the referees and the game announcer. Delays will occur if teams do not respond to their instructions.
o   Each set of fields will have a central FCS Operator.
o   The game announcer will start the autonomous and tele-op portions of the match with a countdown: “3-2-1 Go!” The FCS operator will then click on the FTC start/resume match button on “Go!”
o   Drivers may pick-up their Logitech Controllers when instructed by the referees/FTA or game announcer, typically after the autonomous period has been scored.
o   Pay attention to the referees and the game announcer so that we can start the tele-op portion of the match without delay.
o   Referees will announce when teams may remove their robots from the playing fields. Please clear the area as quickly as possible so that teams for the next match can set up.
o   Return alliance flags to the queuing area.

    19.  Matches Line-Up
Once again, the match schedule will be generated around 7:30am, once all of the teams have checked-in.

    • Matches Immediately After Opening Ceremony: The first set of matches (Matches #1) for each division, will start immediately following the conclusion of the Opening Ceremony (11:15am). The teams for Match #1 will need to be queued up during Opening Ceremony. (This will be 8 teams.) Members of the drive teams, for these eight teams, will be watching the opening ceremonies from the sidelines near the playing fields. Teams will connect to the wireless network while the Get Over It! game animation is being projected on the screen at the end of the Opening Ceremony. The first match will start immediately following the end of the game animation.
Teams participating in matches #2 & #3, please report to the queuing areas in the Main Lounge by 11:00am. Teams will establish their WiFi connections at the end of the Opening Ceremony. These teams may watch the Opening Ceremony from the bleachers.

    • Volunteer Break: We will be having a brief break for volunteers on the field from 12:30pm-1:30pm. Teams participating in the first two matches after the Volunteer Break need to report to the playing field by 1:15pm so that we can start the match at 1:30pm. Teams participating in the third or fourth matches after the break need to report to the queuing area at 1:25pm.

    20.  Media Pass
The area around the playing fields can and will be very congested. In order to prevent over-congestion, each team will receive one “media pass”. We will only allow those people with the “driver” buttons (2) or “coach” buttons (1) to be near the playing fields. All other team members must be in the stands or in the Pit area.

Each field will have designated security to enforce these restrictions. If you do not have a media pass, a driver button or a coach button, please do not attempt to get near the fields.

    21.  Dining
The River Room dining facility, located on the IMU’s 1st Floor, will be open on Saturday, from 7:00am-6:00pm for teams, coaches, and spectators. Teams are responsible for their own meals.

Teams are welcome to bring in their own food. However, food cannot be consumed in the pit area.

    22.  Alliance Selection & Elimination Matches
All teams will be able to participate in at least five qualifying matches. After they have concluded, this will begin the Alliance Selection Process for the Elimination Matches. Elimination Matches will begin 15 minutes after the Alliance Selection has taken place. Please review sections 3.6.7 and 3.6.8 of the Get Over It! Game Manual. Please keep in mind, it may be confusing, but the volunteers will help your team through the process.

    23.  Get Over It! Concluding Ceremony
The Concluding Ceremony will start a few minutes after the completion of the Finalist Matches, at approximately 6:15pm. The Judged Awards, trophies, and medallions will be during this ceremony.
    24.  “Gracious Professionalism”
The FTC-Iowa Championship is an exciting day. A key way to make this day successful is to remember the FIRST Credo: “Gracious Professionalism”. Please review section 1.4 of the Get Over It! Game Manual about Gracious Professionalism.

The volunteers have worked very hard to make the FTC-Iowa Championship event a good event. Please remember to respect the volunteers and thank them for their time.
