At the beginning of the day, we heard the following from several teams:
--"We can't get our robot to move, and we are getting frustrated!"
--"What is the next thing we need to do after building this chassis?"
--"We haven't been able to get Samantha to work. Please help!"
--"Firmware? What's Firmware?"
By the end of the event, and a half of a day later, we had nearly all of the robots moving, many students driving, and Samantha working like a charm. (Thank you, John Toebes & gang!)
As far as the explanation for firmware, simple: "Its not hardware. Its not software. Its Firmware. Kinda like a jello-like substance." Not sure if this helps....
Another great conversation: Team: "We left our ZXT at our school." Volunteer: "You mean your NXT?" Team: "Yeah." Volunteer: "Although that is the brain to your robot, I do have one you can borrow. His name is Larry." Team: "Thank you!" By the end of the day, the team was able to get their bot to move using Larry, the borrowed brain....The team was so thrilled...what a great feeling.
